Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI) is a public airport in Sangamon County, Illinois. It is located about three miles (6 km) northwest of downtown Springfield, Illinois. The airport is owned by the Springfield Airport Authority (SAA).

This airport is one of the busiest in Illinois. It is the seventh busiest among the 12 commercial airports in the state. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) considers it an important airport for public flights.

Military Use at the Airport

The airport is also a home for military operations. It has a special area called Capital Airport Air National Guard Station. This area covers about 91 acres (37 hectares).

This station is where the 183d Fighter Wing (183 FW) is based. This is a unit of the Illinois Air National Guard. They work with the Air Combat Command (ACC). The 183 FW has 321 full-time and 800 part-time military members. In total, about 1,321 people work there.

The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is quite large. It covers about 2,300 acres (930 hectares) of land. The airport is 598 feet (182 meters) above sea level.

It has three main runways for planes to take off and land:

  • Runway 4/22 is 8,001 feet (2,439 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide. It is made of concrete.
  • Runway 13/31 is 7,400 feet (2,256 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide. It is made of asphalt.
  • Runway 18/36 is 5,300 feet (1,615 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide. It is made of asphalt and concrete.

In 2019, there were about 26,597 aircraft operations at the airport. This means planes took off or landed about 73 times each day. Most of these flights (66%) were for general aviation (private planes). Military flights made up 18%, and air taxis were 15%. Only 1% were airline flights.

In June 2020, 169 aircraft were based at the airport. This included 133 single-engine planes, 29 multi-engine planes, 6 jet planes, and 1 helicopter.
