The Acacia humifusa is a special type of shrub, which is a bushy plant. It's part of the Acacia family, also known as wattles. This plant is found only in the northern parts of Australia, meaning it's endemic there.

What Does the Acacia humifusa Look Like?

This shrub stands upright and can spread out wide. It usually grows between 0.4 to 3 meters (about 1 to 10 feet) tall. It can also spread out up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) wide.

Its bark is usually grey or brownish-grey. It can be cracked or sometimes smooth. The young branches are soft and velvety. They are light fawn to dark brown in color.

Like most Acacia plants, it doesn't have regular leaves. Instead, it has what are called phyllodes. These are flattened leaf stems that act like leaves. The phyllodes are always green. They are not perfectly even in shape. They can look like an oval, a diamond, or almost round. Each phyllode is about 4 to 8 centimeters (1.5 to 3 inches) long. They are also 20 to 60 millimeters (0.8 to 2.4 inches) wide. The phyllodes might have a tiny pointed tip. They also have three or four clear, curved lines, which are like veins.

The Acacia humifusa produces pretty yellow flowers. It blooms during two main periods. You can see its flowers from January to April. Or, they might bloom from June to September.

Where Can You Find Acacia humifusa?

This plant naturally grows in the northern parts of Australia. You can find it in the Kimberley area of Western Australia. Here, it often grows on rocky hilltops and slopes. It prefers sandy soils over quartzite or sandstone rock.

It also grows on islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria. You can find it across the Top End of the Northern Territory. It also grows from around Cape York in the north of Queensland. From there, it stretches down the east coast to Cape Cleveland. This includes many islands along the coast.

Acacia humifusa often lives on hillsides or in deep valleys called gorges. It grows in shallow, sandy, and rocky soils. It is part of different plant groups. These can be low heathlands, open Acacia woodlands, or Eucalyptus woodlands.
