History of the Academy
The Academy of Military Engineering was founded in 1833. For many years, it was located in a grand building called the Montesclaros Palace. This palace was on the west side of Guadalajara city.
The Montesclaros Palace and the Fire
The Montesclaros Palace was not just a school; it also held many valuable items. It had a large collection of models, important documents, books, and artworks related to military engineering. However, in 1924, a big fire broke out at the palace. This fire sadly destroyed a part of the building and many of these precious collections.
After the fire, the Academy couldn't use the main palace building anymore. So, from 1924 until it moved in 1932, the school continued its lessons in the buildings next to the palace. Today, these annex buildings are used for the General Military Archive of Guadalajara, which stores many historical military documents, and another building called the palace of Antonio de Mendoza.
Moving to Segovia
In 1932, the Academy of Military Engineering of Guadalajara closed its doors in Guadalajara. It then moved to Segovia and merged with the Artillery Academy. This meant that two important military schools joined together to form an even bigger and stronger academy.
