Who Was Carlos Faraudo?
Carlos Faraudo was born into a wealthy family in Madrid. He studied at the Academy of Military Engineering of Guadalajara. In August 1923, he finished his studies and became a lieutenant. He was then sent to Melilla, a Spanish city in North Africa.
Moving to Madrid and Promotions
In November 1925, Carlos Faraudo moved back to Madrid. He continued to serve in the army. By October 1929, he was promoted to the rank of captain. This showed his dedication to his military career.
Joining Political Groups
In 1931, Carlos Faraudo became a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This was a political party that believed in socialist ideas. From 1932 to 1933, he was sent to Bolivia. There, he worked as an instructor for the Bolivian Army. He returned to Spain when the Chaco War started in South America.
Training Socialist Youth

Later, Carlos Faraudo joined a secret military group called Unión Militar Republicana Antifascista (UMRA). This group was made up of military officers who supported the Spanish Republic. The Events Leading to His Death
On the evening of May 8, 1936, Carlos Faraudo was walking with his wife. He was attacked in the street by members of the Falangist party. The Falangists were a political group that supported ideas similar to fascism. Faraudo was severely wounded during this attack.
His Name on a List
It was believed that Carlos Faraudo's name was on a list. This list was supposedly made by another secret military group. This group was called Unión Militar Española (UME). The UME was against the UMRA, the group Faraudo belonged to.
His Passing and Public Reaction
Carlos Faraudo was quickly taken to a clinic. However, he sadly died from his injuries the next morning. His burial was a very big event. Many people came to mourn him. His death was also a major news story in the Second Spanish Republic. It showed how much tension and conflict there was in Spain at that time, just before the Civil War.
