The Académie des Beaux-Arts (which means 'Academy of Fine Arts' in French) is a special group of talented artists in Paris, France. It's one of five important academies that are part of the Institut de France. In 2021, the president of the academy was Alain-Charles Perrot, a French architect.

What is the Académie des Beaux-Arts?

The Académie des Beaux-Arts was created in 1816 in Paris. It was formed by joining three older academies:

  • The Academy of Painting and Sculpture (started in 1648)
  • The Academy of Music (started in 1669)
  • The Academy of Architecture (started in 1671)

The Académie des Beaux-Arts gives out several awards to talented artists. These awards help support and celebrate great work in different art forms.

Who are the Members?

The Académie des Beaux-Arts has many members who are experts in different art forms. They believe in having a mix of different artistic talents.

The members are divided into nine main sections based on their art:

  • Section III: Architecture
  • Section IV: Engraving (making prints from carved surfaces)
  • Section V: Musical composition (creating music)
  • Section VI: Unattached (Free) members (artists who don't fit into other specific categories)
  • Section VII: Artistic creation in cinema and audio-visual fields (since 1985)
  • Section VIII: Photography (since 2005)
  • Section IX: Choreography (creating dance routines, since 2018)

The Académie also includes foreign associate members from other countries.
