The Achaguas Municipality is a local government area in Venezuela. It is one of seven municipalities in the state of Apure. A municipality is like a county or a district.
Achaguas Municipality covers a large area of about 15,754 square kilometers. In 2011, about 58,516 people lived here. The main town and administrative center of this municipality is Achaguas.
History of Achaguas
The town of Santa Bárbara de la Isla de los Achaguas was founded in 1774. It was started by a friar named Alonso de Castro. The town got its name from a local native tribe called "The Achaguas."
A special wooden statue, "El Nazareno de Achaguas," has been in the town's church since 1835. This statue was a gift from General José Antonio Páez. He gave it to the town after a big victory in the battle for Venezuela's independence from Spain. This important battle happened in Carabobo.
People and Population
In 2007, estimates showed that about 65,081 people lived in Achaguas Municipality. This number was higher than the 55,446 people living there in 2000.
The municipality's population makes up about 13.7% of the entire state of Apure. This means that for every square kilometer, there are about 4.13 people living there.
