Achaguas was founded a long time ago, in the year 1774. A friar named Alonso de Castro started the town. Its name comes from the Achagua people, a native tribe who lived in the area.
- Originally, the town had a longer name: "Santa Bárbara de la Isla de los Achaguas".
- This name honored Saint Barbara and recognized the local Achagua tribe.
The Nazarene of Achaguas
Since 1835, a special wooden statue has been kept in the town's church. This statue is called "El Nazareno de Achaguas" (The Nazarene of Achaguas). Many people consider it miraculous and visit it.
