Achiote is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the middle-north part of Naranjito, Puerto Rico. Naranjito is one of the many towns in Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 3,919 people lived in Achiote.
Achiote is a lovely place with an average height of about 781 feet (238 meters) above sea level. It covers an area of about 2.89 square miles (7.49 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.09 square miles (0.23 square kilometers), is water.
One important place in Achiote is the Coleen Vázquez school, known in Spanish as Escuela Coleen Vázquez Urrutia.
Achiote's History
Puerto Rico has a rich history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, showed that 1,094 people lived in Achiote barrio at that time. Over the years, Achiote's population has changed:
- In 1980, there were 3,727 people.
- By 1990, the population grew to 4,005.
- In 2000, it reached 4,310 people.
- In 2010, the population was 3,919.
What are Sectors?
Barrios like Achiote are often divided into even smaller local areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (pronounced sek-TOR-es), which means sectors in English.
Sectors can have different names. Some are simply called sector, while others might be named urbanización, reparto, barriada, or residencial. These names often describe the type of neighborhood or housing in that area.
Achiote barrio has many sectors, including places like Achiote Centro, Barriada La Aldea, and Urbanización Jardines de Naranjito.

Achiote is home to talented people. For example, Aryam Díaz, who is from Achiote, was chosen to represent Puerto Rico in the Miss World 2021 competition.
