History of Acton
How Acton Got Its Name
The community was first called Farmersville. But in 1854, the U.S. Postal Service found out there was already another town named Farmersville in Posey County, Indiana. So, the town was renamed Acton.
The Acton Camp Ground
From 1859 to 1905, a group of Methodists ran a special place called the Acton Camp Ground. It was about 40 acres large, just north of the town. It was located near the corner of Southport and Acton roads. People could easily get there by train, thanks to an agreement with the Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railroad.
A fire sadly destroyed the camp buildings in 1864. But the group worked hard and rebuilt them. Then, another fire happened in 1905. This time, they couldn't raise enough money to rebuild the camp. So, the land was sold.
