The Adam and Eve is a very old pub in the city of Norwich, England. It is located near important places like Norwich Cathedral and the Great Hospital. Many people believe it is the oldest pub in Norwich. The first time it was mentioned was way back in 1249!

A Look Back in Time

The Adam and Eve pub has a very long history. The earliest record of a building on this spot was in 1241 or 1249. Back then, it was a brewhouse. A brewhouse is a place where people make ale, a type of beer.

Who Owned the Brewhouse?

This brewhouse was used by workers who were building the famous Norwich Cathedral nearby. It was owned by Benedictine monks. These monks lived at the Great Hospital, which was also close by.

Serving Ale

For many years, the Adam and Eve was unique. It was the last pub in Norwich to serve ale directly from large barrels. This means they didn't have modern taps or pumps. A proper bar was finally put in place in 1971.

The Building Itself

The pub you see today is a building from the 1600s. It is made from strong materials like brick and flint stone. Over time, parts were added, including special roof decorations called Dutch gables.

An Ancient Well

Underneath the floor of the lower bar area, there is a very old well. This well dates back to the Saxon times. The Saxons lived in England many centuries ago, long before the pub was built!
