Adam van Noort (born 1561 or 1562, died 1641) was a famous painter and artist from Flanders, which is now part of Belgium. He was known for his history paintings, which told stories, and also for his portraits. Adam van Noort was a very important teacher. He taught two of the most famous Flemish painters: Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens. He also designed pictures for printmakers to turn into engravings.

Life of Adam van Noort

Adam van Noort was born and died in Antwerp, a big city in Belgium. His parents were Lambert van Noort and Katelijne van Broeckhuysen. His father, Lambert, was also an artist. He designed stained-glass windows, made engravings, and was an architect. He also painted, but less often.

Adam probably learned to paint from his father first. But his father died when Adam was still young. Adam became a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1587. The Guild of Saint Luke was like a special club or union for artists in Antwerp. He married Elisabeth Nuyts and they had five children together.

Adam van Noort was chosen to be the leader, or "dean," of the Guild of Saint Luke from 1597 to 1602. He had some disagreements with the Guild during this time. For example, he used some blank painting panels from the Guild's room to create a gift for them. Other members thought this was not allowed, so he had to replace the panels. He also had trouble settling his accounts on time after his time as dean ended.

Today, Adam van Noort is most famous because he taught two incredible artists: Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens. Rubens only studied with him for a short time, so he might not have been greatly influenced by van Noort's style. However, Jordaens married Adam van Noort's daughter, Elisabeth. Jordaens later influenced his teacher and father-in-law's painting style.

Adam van Noort taught about 35 students in total. This shows that he was a very respected artist in his time. He was also successful with money and bought several properties in Antwerp. Some of his other students included Hendrick van Balen and Ferdinand van Apshoven the Elder.

Van Noort lived to be quite old. He likely stopped painting around 1630. He made his last will in August 1640 and passed away shortly after September of that year.

Adam van Noort's Artworks

Van Noort mostly painted religious scenes and portraits of people. He worked with other artists like Marten de Vos to decorate buildings for special events.

He started his career painting in a style called Mannerism. Later, he developed his own unique style. An example of his work is The preaching of John the Baptist from 1601. Another painting, The Last Supper, which he created with Willem Key, shows strong movement in its design.

Later in his career, when Jacob Jordaens joined his workshop, van Noort's style changed again. He started to use more of the dramatic and grand style of the Baroque period. You can see this influence in his painting Let the children come to me (around 1609–10), which is now in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
