The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are a group of very famous art museums in Belgium. They hold a huge collection of amazing artworks, from old paintings to modern sculptures.
Exploring the Museums
The museums are located in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. You can find them right in the downtown area, on a place called the Coudenberg. There are actually four different museums that make up this group.
Two of these museums are found in the main building:
- The Museum of Ancient Art
- The Museum of Modern Art, Brussels
The other two museums are a bit smaller and are located a few kilometers away from the city center. These museums are special because they focus on the work of specific Belgian artists:
- The Constantin Meunier Museum
- The Antoine Wiertz Museum
The Royal Museums have more than 20,000 drawings, sculptures, and paintings. These artworks date from the early 1400s all the way up to today.
Amazing Art Collections
The museum has a very large collection of Flemish painting. This type of art comes from a historical region called Flanders. You can see paintings by famous artists like Bruegel, Rogier van der Weyden, Robert Campin, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens.
One of the most special parts of the museum is the "Rubens Room." This room is dedicated to the famous artist Peter Paul Rubens. It proudly displays more than 20 of his paintings!
The Main Building
The main building of the Royal Museums is where the Museum of Ancient Art is located today. It was originally built as the Palais des Beaux-Arts, which means "Palace of Fine Arts."
A Belgian architect named Alphonse Balat designed this beautiful building. King Leopold II of Belgium paid for its construction. The building was finished in 1887.
