From 1968 to 1975, Edmondson went to Pocklington School in Yorkshire. He later said he found the school's many rules to be a challenge. In the early 1980s, Edmondson and Mayall performed as a comedy duo called 20th Century Coyote. They became popular at The Comedy Store in London. They also joined a group of comedians at a club called The Comic Strip. This group included other future stars like French and Saunders.
The group's success led to a TV series called The Comic Strip Presents.... The show featured short comedy films. The first episode, "Five Go Mad in Dorset", was a funny take on Enid Blyton's Famous Five books, with Edmondson as one of the stars.
Famous TV Shows
The BBC saw how popular the comedians were and created the sitcom The Young Ones (1982–1984). Edmondson played Vyvyan Basterd, a punk student known for his wild and chaotic behaviour. The show was a huge hit.
In 1987, Edmondson, Mayall, and fellow comedian Nigel Planer starred in Filthy Rich & Catflap. It was a comedy about the world of show business.
One of their most famous shows was Bottom (1991–1995). Edmondson and Mayall co-wrote and starred in the series. It was about two silly and unsuccessful flatmates. The show was known for its slapstick comedy and became very popular. They also took the show on several successful stage tours across the UK.
