Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko (born on January 28, 1987) is a famous Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is known by his stage names Adekunle Gold and AG Baby. He sings Afrobeats music and is currently signed with Def Jam Recordings.
Adekunle Gold became very popular in 2015 with his hit song "Sade". This song was a highlife version of "Story of My Life" by One Direction. He then signed a deal with YBNL Nation. In 2015, he released his first album, Gold. This album reached number 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart. Before Gold came out, he released three popular songs: "Sade", "Orente", and "Pick Up". Did you know that before he signed with YBNL, Adekunle Gold designed their official logo? He also created designs for other artists like Lil Kesh and Olamide. His Music Journey
Starting Out (2010–2014)
When Adekunle Gold was growing up, he loved listening to music by King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. He joined his church's junior choir when he was a teenager. He even wrote his very first song at just 15 years old! In 2014, he decided to become a solo artist. Before that, he was part of a music group he started with a friend from school.
He became known as the "King of Photoshop" for a funny reason. He posted a picture he edited using Adobe Photoshop where he looked like he was hugging Tiwa Savage. This picture became very popular online. On December 19, 2014, he released "Sade". This song was a cover of "Story of My Life" by One Direction. "Sade" was a big hit and was even nominated for an award.
Rise to Fame (2015–Present)
After "Sade" became popular, Adekunle Gold released his first official song called "Orente". He signed a music contract with YBNL Nation on March 5, 2015. He was nominated for the Most Promising Act of the Year award in 2015.
On July 18, 2016, Adekunle Gold showed everyone the cover and song list for his first album, Gold. The album had 16 songs. It was released on July 25, a few days earlier than planned. When it came out, it quickly reached number 7 on the Billboard World Album Chart. Many music critics praised the album.
After his contract with YBNL Nation ended, Adekunle Gold started his own band called "The 79th Element". This name refers to the atomic number of gold. In 2018, Unity Bank chose Adekunle Gold to be their brand ambassador. On August 21, 2020, he released his album Afro Pop Vol. 1.
On February 4, 2022, he released his fourth album, Catch Me If You Can. In March 2023, Adekunle Gold signed a new deal with Def Jam Recordings. The CEO of Def Jam Recordings, Tunji Balogun, announced this exciting news.
His Family Life
Adekunle Gold married fellow singer Simi in January 2019. They had been together for five years before getting married. They welcomed their daughter, Deja, in May 2020.
On July 15, 2022, Adekunle Gold shared that he has lived with sickle cell disease his whole life. This personal experience inspired his song "5 Star". He now works to raise awareness about this condition through his foundation, 'Adekunle Gold Foundation'.
