Adelaide of Vermandois (died September 23, 1120) was a powerful noblewoman who held the titles of Countess of Vermandois and Valois in her own right. This means she inherited and ruled these lands herself, not through her husband. She was Countess from 1080 to 1102.
Adelaide was the daughter of Herbert IV, Count of Vermandois and Adele of Valois. Her family, the Carolingian dynasty, was very old and important in European history.
Her Marriages and Family
Around 1080, Adelaide married Hugh. Hugh was a son of King Henry I of France and the younger brother of King Philip I of France. When Adelaide's father passed away, Hugh became the Count of Vermandois because of his marriage to Adelaide.
Later, in 1104, Adelaide married Renaud II, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis. From this marriage, they had a daughter named Margaret of Clermont.
Passing on Her Title
In 1102, Adelaide passed her title of Countess to her son, Ralph I. Adelaide died in 1120. She was the very last person from the Carolingian family to hold the County of Vermandois.
