The Admiral Fitzroy Inn is a historic building in Newport, Rhode Island. It is located on Thames Street within the Newport Historic District. The inn is named after Robert FitzRoy, who was a Vice-Admiral.

History of the Building

The Admiral Fitzroy Inn was built in 1854. A person named Dudly Newton designed it. For many years, from 1854 to 1924, the building was home to the Sisters of Mercy Convent. These were nuns from St. Mary's Church.

The building also housed the very first private Catholic school in Rhode Island. This school was called St. Mary's Academy. It was open from 1854 to 1924. A famous event connected to St. Mary's Church is the wedding of Jacqueline Bouvier and John F. Kennedy. He later became a U.S. President.

In 1985, the building was moved from its original spot. It was placed at its current address, 398 Thames Street. After this move, it became known as the Admiral Fitzroy Inn.

Building Style

The main style of the Admiral Fitzroy Inn is Gothic Revival. This style often includes pointed arches and detailed decorations, like old churches. Another style seen in the building is Italianate. Italianate buildings often have wide eaves and tall, narrow windows. These styles are noted in official historic records for the Newport Historic District.

What's Inside?

The Admiral Fitzroy Inn has eighteen rooms. Each room has walls that are hand-painted with decorative designs. Guests can also use a conference room. There is a roof-top deck where visitors can enjoy views, possibly of the ocean. The inn also has a small dining room.

For guests, there is off-street parking available. Inside the lobby, you can see some old items. One special antique is an original Admiral Fitzroy Barometer. This is a device that measures air pressure, often used to predict weather.
