Adolf Born (born June 12, 1930 – died May 22, 2016) was a talented artist from the Czech Republic. He was a painter, illustrator, filmmaker, and someone who drew funny pictures called caricatures. He was known for his unique drawings of strange animals and fancy gentlemen in old-fashioned clothes.

Adolf Born was recognized for his amazing work illustrating children's books. He was even a finalist for the important Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2008. This award is given to authors and illustrators who make a big difference in children's literature. He also won many other international awards, like the Grand Prix at the International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal. France also honored him as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

About Adolf Born

Adolf Born was born in a town called České Velenice in 1930. This town was on the border with Austria. When he was five years old, his family moved to Prague, which is the capital city of the Czech Republic.

He studied art from 1949 to 1955 at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. He learned how to draw caricatures and newspaper cartoons there. From the 1960s onwards, his artwork was shown in exhibitions all over the world.

In 1966, Adolf Born worked with another artist named Gene Deitch. Together, they made the very first animated film based on a story by J. R. R. Tolkien. It was called The Hobbit!

At first, many people knew him as a cartoonist whose drawings appeared in magazines. But after 1973, rules about what artists could draw changed. This led him to focus more on making animated films and illustrating books. In 1974, he was named the cartoonist of the year in Montreal. He also won a special award called the Palma d'Oro in Italy.

Adolf Born was very good at creating special small pictures called bookplates. These are designs that people put inside books to show who owns them. He often used a printing method called color lithography for these. He had over 100 art exhibitions and illustrated hundreds of books. He also designed many sets and costumes for plays in theaters.

He was married and had one daughter.

A special honor was given to him when an asteroid was named after him. The asteroid 17806 Adolfborn was discovered by an astronomer named Petr Pravec.

Adolf Born passed away on May 22, 2016, when he was 85 years old.
