Adolfo Arnoldo Majano Ramos (born 21 April 1938) is a former military leader and political figure from El Salvador. He was one of the main people who led a military takeover on October 15, 1979. After the takeover, he became the chairman of the Revolutionary Government Junta of El Salvador from 1979 to 1980.

Early Life and Military Career

Adolfo Arnoldo Majano Ramos was born on April 21, 1938, in the Morazán Department in El Salvador. He began his military training in 1955 at the Escuela Militar Capitán General Gerardo Barrios. He finished his studies in 1958 and became a junior lieutenant in the infantry.

In 1974, he graduated from a higher military school in Mexico City. He also studied at the School of the Americas in the Panama Canal Zone. After his training, he served in the Salvadoran Army. He was later promoted to the rank of colonel.

The 1979 Coup and New Government

In 1979, Colonel Majano was part of a secret plan by military officers. Their goal was to remove the government of Carlos Humberto Romero. On October 15, 1979, they successfully carried out a military takeover.

After the coup, Majano became one of two army representatives. They formed a new government called the Revolutionary Government Junta of El Salvador. Many people saw Majano as the most important leader in this new government.

Changes in the Junta

On December 13, 1980, there was a meeting of the Salvadoran Army's leaders. At this meeting, Jose Napoleon Duarte, a member of the Christian Democratic Party, became the President of the junta. Colonel Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez became the vice president.

Colonel Majano was offered a job as a military representative in Spain. However, he did not accept this offer. He believed the junta was supporting groups that were too extreme. In May 1980, Colonel Majano stepped down from his roles. He was no longer the Commander-in-Chief or the Chairman of the Revolutionary Government Junta. Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez took over his positions. Majano fully resigned from the junta on December 13, 1980.

Arrest and Life in Exile

On December 15, Majano held a press conference. He said that the junta was involved in acts of violence. He also accused the Christian Democratic Party of making too many compromises. Because of his statements, the junta ordered his arrest. This decision caused protests from young military officers.

Some news reports suggested that Majano planned to join the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. This was a group fighting against the government. On February 20, 1981, Majano was arrested. He was imprisoned along with Roberto D'Aubuisson.

Moving to Other Countries

Majano was released from prison on March 20, 1981. After his release, he went to live in Panama. This is called going into exile, meaning he had to leave his home country.

When Panamanian President Omar Torrijos died in 1981, Majano moved again. He went to Mexico. Later, in 1983, he moved to Canada. He returned to El Salvador in 1988. While there, he survived an attempt on his life.

Personal Life

Adolfo Arnoldo Majano currently lives in Canada. He is married and has four children.
