Early Life and Military Career
Adolfo Arnoldo Majano Ramos was born in the Morazán Department of El Salvador. He began his military training in 1955 at the Escuela Militar Capitán General Gerardo Barrios. He finished his studies in 1958 and became a junior lieutenant in the infantry.
Later, in 1974, he graduated from a higher military school in Mexico City. He also studied at the School of the Americas. After his training, he served in the Salvadoran Army. He was promoted to the rank of colonel after working with the 1st Infantry Brigade.
The 1979 Government Change
In 1979, Colonel Majano was part of a group of military officers. They planned to change the government led by Carlos Humberto Romero. On October 15, 1979, this group successfully took control of the government. This event is known as the 1979 Salvadoran coup d'état.
After the government change, Colonel Majano became one of two army representatives. They formed a new governing body called the Revolutionary Government Junta of El Salvador. Many people believed that Majano was the most important person in this new government.
Changes in Leadership
On December 13, 1980, there was a meeting of the Salvadoran Army's command. At this meeting, Jose Napoleon Duarte, a member of the Christian Democratic Party, became the President of the junta. Colonel Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez became the vice president.
Colonel Majano was offered a job as a military representative in Spain. However, he did not accept this offer. He believed that the junta was supporting groups with very strong and sometimes harsh ideas. Colonel Majano stepped down as Commander-in-Chief and Chairman of the Revolutionary Government Junta in May 1980. Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez took his place. Majano officially left the junta on December 13, 1980.
Life After the Junta
On December 15, 1980, Colonel Majano held a press conference. He openly criticized the junta's actions and the Christian Democratic Party. Because of his statements, the junta ordered his arrest. This decision caused protests from young military leaders.
News reports often suggested that Majano planned to join the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. This was a group that opposed the government. On February 20, 1981, Majano was arrested. He was held in prison. He was released on March 20, 1981, and then left El Salvador to live in Panama.
After the Panamanian President Omar Torrijos passed away in 1981, Majano moved to Mexico. In 1983, he moved again, this time to Canada. He returned to El Salvador in 1988. During this time, he survived an attempt on his life.
