Adreian DeAngleo Payne (born February 19, 1991 – died May 9, 2022) was a talented American basketball player. He played as a center or power forward. Adreian played for teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), like the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. He also played for many teams in Europe and Asia. Before turning professional, Payne played college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans.

High School Basketball Star
Adreian Payne played high school basketball at Jefferson High School. In his senior year, he was amazing on the court. He scored about 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots per game.
He helped his team win the Division IV state championship. They finished the season with a great record of 19 wins and 5 losses. Because of his excellent play, the Dayton Daily News named him to their first-team All-Area list. He was also chosen as a fourth-team Parade All-American. This showed he was one of the best high school players in the country.
College Career Highlights
When Adreian started at Michigan State University, he played in 34 games. He averaged about 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. During this time, doctors found out he had a condition that made his lungs work less well. This sometimes affected how long he could play without getting tired.
In his second year, Adreian became a key player for the Spartans. He led the team in blocked shots with 39. He also averaged 7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He was recognized for his good grades too, earning a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten team.
By his junior year, Adreian was one of the best free-throw shooters in the Big Ten conference. He made 84.8% of his free throws. He also blocked 46 shots, which was one of the best numbers in Michigan State history. He averaged 10.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Adreian was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten, a big honor for college players.
Before his senior year, Adreian was considered one of the top college players in the nation. He was on watchlists for major awards like the Naismith and Wooden Awards. He missed a few games due to an ankle injury. Even with the injury, he was still named Second Team All-Big Ten at the end of the season.
Friendship with Lacey Holsworth
During the 2013–14 college basketball season, Adreian became very close friends with Lacey Holsworth. Lacey was an 8-year-old girl who was battling cancer. Their friendship began in 2011 when Adreian met her during a team visit to a hospital. They often texted and talked after that first meeting.
Lacey had a type of cancer called neuroblastoma. She was a huge fan of Adreian and the Spartans. She even joined Adreian at center court on Senior Night. She also helped him cut down the nets after the team won the Big Ten men's basketball tournament. Lacey, who was also known as "Princess Lacey," sadly passed away from her cancer on April 8, 2014. Their friendship touched many people across the country.
Professional Basketball Career
NBA Journey
On June 26, 2014, Adreian Payne was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft. He was the 15th player picked overall. He signed his first NBA contract in July after playing well in the Summer League. He averaged 12.5 points and 7 rebounds there.
He missed the start of his first NBA season due to a foot injury. When he returned, he spent some time playing for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Austin Spurs. These teams are part of the NBA Development League, where players can get more playing time. Adreian made his NBA debut on December 26, 2014, playing against the Milwaukee Bucks.
In February 2015, Adreian was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. On March 9, 2015, he had one of his best games. He scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Timberwolves kept him for another season. He also spent some time with the Erie BayHawks in the D-League.
In 2017, Adreian signed with the Orlando Magic. He played most of that season with their G League team, the Lakeland Magic.
Playing Overseas
After his time in the NBA, Adreian Payne played for several teams outside the United States.
- Panathinaikos (Greece): In February 2018, he joined Panathinaikos in Greece. He played well, scoring 12 points and getting 8 rebounds in one game. His team won the Greek League championship in 2018. He returned to Panathinaikos in January 2019 and helped them win the Greek Basketball Cup title.
- Nanjing Tongxi Monkey King (China): For the 2018–19 season, Adreian played for the Nanjing Tongxi Monkey King in China. He averaged 16.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game there.
- ASVEL (France): In March 2019, he signed with ASVEL Basket in France. With ASVEL, Adreian won two championships in 2019: the Pro A championship and the French Cup.
- Ormanspor (Turkey): In February 2021, Adreian played for OGM Ormanspor in Turkey.
- Juventus (Lithuania): In December 2021, he joined Juventus Utena in Lithuania. He averaged 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game before leaving the team in February 2022.
