Early Life and First Drums
Adrian Erlandsson was born in Malmö, Sweden. He is the older brother of Daniel Erlandsson, who is also a famous drummer for the band Arch Enemy. The brothers grew up together and both started playing drums when they were very young.
Adrian's music journey began in 1981 when he was just 11 years old. After getting his first drum kit, he and his friends started a band. They learned to play classic rock songs. The very first song he learned was "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett. He later got his brother Daniel interested in drumming. Daniel has said, "If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't be playing today."
Inspired by bands like Judas Priest, Adrian formed several bands as a teenager. He played in a thrash metal band called Penance in 1987. This early experience helped him develop his skills as a powerful drummer.
Career with Famous Bands
Adrian's professional career took off when he moved to Gothenburg for university. There, he joined some of the most important bands in the melodic death metal scene.
At the Gates
In 1990, Erlandsson joined the band At the Gates. He became famous for his fast and precise drumming style. His bandmate Anders Björler once said that Erlandsson "hit the drums hard," which helped create the band's powerful sound. He played with the band until they broke up in 1996.
In 2007, At the Gates got back together for a reunion tour. They thought it would be their final tour, but they reunited again in 2010. Since then, they have released new albums, including At War with Reality in 2014.
The Haunted
The day after At the Gates first split up in 1996, Erlandsson started a new band called The Haunted with guitarist Patrik Jensen. He played with them for a few years but left in 1999.
However, his story with The Haunted wasn't over. In 2013, Patrik Jensen called him and asked him to rejoin the band. Erlandsson was excited to play with the new members, so he agreed. The band officially announced his return in a video, and he has been their drummer ever since.
Cradle of Filth
In 1999, Erlandsson was asked to join the British band Cradle of Filth. He explained how it happened:
I got approached by Cradle of Filth at the Dynamo gig '99 where we played with The Haunted... I ended up joining the band on a permanent basis…
He recorded several albums with them, including Thornography. In 2006, he left the band to focus on other music projects. He said he was proud of the music they made together.
Paradise Lost
In 2009, Erlandsson joined another famous British band, Paradise Lost. He was recommended by another musician, Jeff Walker. Even though he joined after they recorded the album Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us, he appeared in the music video for the song "The Rise of Denial."
Because he was busy with his other bands, especially At the Gates, he couldn't always tour with Paradise Lost. In 2016, he announced he was leaving the band to focus on his other commitments.
Other Music Projects
Throughout his career, Adrian has played with many other bands.
