What Kinds of Mazes Does Adrian Fisher Make?
Adrian Fisher is a true maze master! He has created many different types of mazes:
Mirror Mazes
He has designed 63 mirror mazes. He was the first to add special themed rooms inside mirror mazes, making them exciting "Mirror Maze Adventures."
Hedge Mazes
He has also made 44 hedge mazes. He was the first to include fun features like Folly Towers (tall, decorative buildings), Tunnels, Walk-through Parting Waterfalls, and Foaming Fountain Gates in his hedge mazes.
Cornfield Mazes
In 1993, he designed the world's first cornfield maze. Since then, he has created over 400 more! He even holds 7 Guinness World Records for his maze designs.
Water Mazes
Adrian Fisher has also created water mazes. Two famous ones are the award-winning Beatles Maze (which he made with Randoll Coate and Graham Burgess) and the Jersey Water Maze.
Path-in-Grass Mazes
He invented a new type of maze called "Path-in-Grass Mazes" and has made more than a dozen of them around the world.
Adrian Fisher's Paving and Mosaic Art
Adrian Fisher also invents special systems for brick paving and mosaic tiles.
- For the Orang Utan Pavement Maze at Edinburgh Zoo, he created a new way to fit together 7-sided and 5-sided (like a regular pentagon) bricks.
- His second paving system, called the 'Fisher Paver', uses 7-sided and 4-sided bricks. It's been used in projects in both Europe and America. These pavers are great because they can create cool designs without needing to be cut, which saves time and effort.
- His third paving system is the Mitre System, which he invented and patented with mathematician Ed Pegg. This system uses unique angular shapes to create beautiful mosaics and paved areas. You can see examples in England, like four Historic Mosaics in the Millennium Maze in Marlow, and the 24-foot-high SciTec Mosaic at Oundle School. In America, there's the Tree of Life Mosaic in a private garden in Connecticut.
Colour Mazes and Other Designs
His Colour Mazes have been featured in Scientific American magazine. You can walk through examples of his Colour Mazes at places like the New York Hall of Science, Eureka Children's Museum in England, and over 30 other locations worldwide.
He also designed the "Star Map" idea for London Buses, which led to the "Spider Map" system they use today.
In the 1980s, he helped design the Blenheim Palace maze, which you can even see on the 2016 Bank of England £5 note.
Puzzles and Books
Adrian Fisher designs puzzles for British newspapers and for the World Puzzle Championships. The Guardian newspaper even named him one of Britain's top 50 designers! He has written more than a dozen books about mazes and puzzles, including "The Art of the Maze" and "The Amazing Book of Mazes."
Exhibitions and Awards
A big art exhibition about Adrian Fisher's work was held at the Norton Museum of Art in Florida from January to March 1997. It even included building full-size permanent mazes outside the museum!
He was the Director of Britain's "1991 – The Year of the Maze" Tourism Campaign. In 2003, he received the Resorgimento Award from the University of Tennessee in the USA. This award celebrates people who show amazing creativity and change the world. He also gave a TEDx talk about "The Pursuit of Happiness" and was a judge for an international labyrinth competition in Russia in 2009.
Life and Recognition
Adrian Fisher and his wife Marie live in a village called Durweston in North Dorset, England. In their garden, they have a yew hedge maze with a central Folly Tower, a mirrored room, a spiral staircase, and a walkway!
In 2020, Adrian Fisher was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his great contributions to international trade and the creative industry. This is a special honor given by the King or Queen of the United Kingdom.
