Adrian Mall is a shopping center located in Adrian, Michigan. It first opened its doors in 1970. This mall has two main stores that are still open: Hobby Lobby and Dunham's Sports. Soon, Ollie's Bargain Outlet will also open there. Two other large spaces, once home to Elder-Beerman and JCPenney, are currently empty. In June 2020, parts of the mall's inside were closed due to problems like roof damage and water leaks.
History
How Adrian Mall Started
Adrian Mall officially opened on September 3, 1970. When it first opened, it had two big stores called anchor stores: Sears and F. W. Woolworth Company. A third anchor store, JCPenney, joined the mall in April 1971.
In 1985, the mall got a big makeover that cost $1.5 million. As part of this update, a new department store called Elder-Beerman was added.
New Owners and Changes
Over the years, Adrian Mall changed owners several times. In 2002, General Growth Properties bought it. Then, in 2008, CBL & Associates Properties took over. By 2010, it was sold again to Jones Lang LaSalle. In December 2014, a company from Texas called Tabani Group bought the mall. They announced plans to make it a top shopping spot. They also hoped to work with local businesses.
In 2009, some stores left the mall, including Waldenbooks and one of the last Sam Goody music stores. Sears closed its doors in 2012. In 2013, there were plans to update the mall again. Part of the old Sears store was turned into a Hobby Lobby. There were also plans for a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and for MC Sports to make its store bigger.
Recent Challenges
In January 2015, JCPenney announced its store at Adrian Mall would close. Dunham's Sports later moved into the space where JCPenney used to be. This area also included the MC Sports store, which had closed in late 2015. Dunham's Sports had its grand opening on May 20, 2016. Sadly, Elder-Beerman closed in April 2018 because its parent company went out of business.
In 2019, Kohan Retail Investment Group bought the mall. Under their ownership, some new local businesses began to open. In March 2020, the mall faced serious problems with its roof and water damage. It was almost closed down. However, the mall got a permit to fix the roof, which allowed it to stay open for a while longer. Even with the permit, not much work was done. Because the problems got worse, the mall's interior was officially closed on June 16, 2020. The mall was given until July 31 to fix the issues or be closed for good. However, Hobby Lobby and Dunham's Sports were allowed to stay open.
On July 5, 2020, a company called Corta Development bought the old Sears building. They announced that the part of the building not used by Hobby Lobby would be updated and expanded. This space will become Ollie's Bargain Outlet.
