Adrianna Nichole "AD" Franch (born November 12, 1990) is an American professional soccer player. She is a talented goalkeeper who has played for several teams. These include the Portland Thorns FC and Kansas City Current.

Adrianna has won many awards during her career. She was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. She has also played for the United States women's national soccer team. With the national team, she helped win the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup and an Olympic Bronze Medal in 2020.

Early Life and High School Soccer

Adrianna Franch grew up in Salina, Kansas. She went to Salina South High School. She was the main goalkeeper for three seasons there. She missed her senior year because of an injury she got playing basketball.

During high school, Adrianna earned many honors. She was named All-State and All-League. She was also the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP). Besides soccer, she was a great basketball player.

Club and Youth Teams

Franch was part of the Kansas Olympic Development Program (ODP) team for three years. She also played on the Region II ODP team. In 2006, she was an ODP National Pool player.

Her club team, the KC Comets Select, won a Kansas state championship in 2006. They also reached the state finals in 2007 and 2008. As a child, Adrianna looked up to Briana Scurry, a famous women's national team goalkeeper. People even called her the "next Bri Scurry."

College Career at Oklahoma State

Franch became the starting goalkeeper for Oklahoma State University in 2009. She played in 24 games as a freshman. She helped the Cowgirls win the Big 12 tournament for the second time.

Adrianna is known as one of the best players in Big 12 Conference and Oklahoma State soccer history. She was named an All-American twice. She was also a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy twice. For all four of her seasons at Oklahoma State, she was named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

Franch holds the OSU record for most shutouts with 38. A shutout means the opposing team scores no goals. She also led the Big 12 in shutouts in three of her four seasons. She ended her college career with 325 saves. Her 38 shutouts rank among the top in NCAA history.

In 2010, Franch was called up to the United States U-20 team. She was the first Oklahoma State soccer player to play for a U.S. national team.

Western New York Flash (2013–2014)

On January 18, 2013, Adrianna Franch was the sixth player chosen in the 2013 NWSL College Draft. She was the first goalkeeper picked in the draft. She was also the first player chosen by the Western New York Flash.

Franch played well in her first regular season game. She made six saves. She finished second in voting for NWSL Rookie of the Year in 2013. Unfortunately, she missed the entire 2014 National Women's Soccer League season due to a serious knee injury.

Avaldsnes IL (2015)

After recovering from her injury, Franch joined Avaldsnes IL in 2015. This is a Norwegian club that plays in the Toppserien league. She started 12 games and recorded 4 shutouts. Her team finished second in the 2015 Toppserien season.

Portland Thorns FC (2016–2021)

On December 10, 2015, Franch signed with the Portland Thorns FC. This team is part of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). In 2016, she helped the Thorns win the NWSL Shield. This award goes to the team with the best regular season record.

In 2017, she became the starting goalkeeper. She set a league record with 11 shutouts in the regular season. She also helped the Thorns win the NWSL Championship. She was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year for her amazing performance.

Franch had another knee injury in 2018. She missed several games after surgery. When she returned, she played very well. She was named Player of the Week after making 11 saves in two games. She was again named to the 2018 NWSL Best XI. She also won NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row. This made her the first player to win the award twice.

On August 17, 2021, Franch was traded to Kansas City Current.

International Career

Franch has played for the United States at different levels. She has been on the U-20, U-23, and senior USWNT teams. Her first call-up to a U.S. youth national team was in late 2009.

She played her first international games at the La Manga Tournament in Spain in March 2010. She played against Norway and Germany. In May 2012, she was called to train with the United States women's national soccer team. This was to help them get ready for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Franch continued to be called to national team training camps. She was part of the team for the 2018 Tournament of Nations, which the United States won. However, she did not play in any games.

In February 2019, U.S. Soccer announced that Franch would be on the team for the 2019 SheBelieves Cup. She played the entire second match of the tournament against England. This was her first time starting a game and earning a "cap" (playing in an official match) for the senior national team.

Personal Life

Adrianna Franch grew up in Salina, Kansas, with her mom and two siblings. When she was ten, her family got a home through Habitat for Humanity. She and her mom helped build the house.

Franch married her wife Emily Boscacci on December 21, 2019. For one of her first games with the national team, she wore a jersey with the name of her childhood hero, Briana Scurry, instead of her own.
