Briana Collette Scurry (born September 7, 1971) is a famous American soccer goalkeeper. She is now retired from playing. Briana also worked as an assistant coach for the Washington Spirit in 2018. She played in 173 international games, which is a lot for a female soccer goalkeeper. This makes her one of the top players in women's soccer history.

Early Life and School

Briana Scurry was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was the youngest of nine children. She had three brothers and five sisters.

Briana played goalie for her high school team, the Anoka High School Tornadoes. She helped them win the Minnesota State Championship in 1989. In high school, she also ran track and played floor hockey and softball. Basketball was her favorite sport back then.

Briana was named Anoka High School's best female athlete. She was also chosen as a High School All-American. This means she was one of the best high school athletes in the whole country.

College Years at UMass

Briana went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She played college soccer there for four years. She stopped opponents from scoring in 37 games. Her team won 48 games, lost 13, and tied 4. She only let in an average of 0.56 goals per game.

In 1993, Briana helped her team, the UMass Minutewomen, have a great season. They won 17 games and made it to the semifinals of the national championship. She was named the National Goalkeeper of the Year in 1993. She was also chosen as an All-American player.

Playing Career

Playing for Clubs

Briana Scurry was one of the first players for the Atlanta Beat. This team was part of the Women's United Soccer Association (USA) (WUSA). This was the first professional soccer league for women where players earned money. She was the main goalkeeper for the Beat for three seasons (2001–2003). She helped her team reach the WUSA Championship Games twice. In 2003, she was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year.

In 2009, Briana joined the Washington Freedom. This was for the first season of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). She had to stop playing in 2010 because of a head injury. She announced her retirement from soccer later that year.

Briana Scurry was a goalkeeper for the United States women's national soccer team. She played for the team from 1994 to 2008. She played in 173 games for the USA, which is a national record for a goalkeeper. She won 133 of those games and stopped opponents from scoring in 71 games.

Briana was the starting goalkeeper for the USA team in many big tournaments:

  • The 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup (they finished 3rd).
  • The 1996 Summer Olympics (they won the gold medal!).
  • The 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup (they were champions!).
  • The 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup (they finished 3rd).
  • The 2004 Summer Olympic Games (they won another gold medal!).

She also played in the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, where the team finished 3rd.

In 2011, Briana Scurry became the general manager for the magicJack team in the WPS league.

Broadcasting

Briana has also worked as a soccer commentator. She helped cover the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup for ESPN. Since 2021, she has been a soccer analyst for CBS. She helped cover the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship.

Coaching

In December 2017, Briana Scurry became the First Assistant Coach for the Washington Spirit. She also helped with their youth soccer programs.
