Some Aedes species can carry and spread serious human diseases. One species, called Aedes albopictus, is known as the most "invasive" mosquito in the world. This means it spreads very quickly to new places. The name Aedes comes from an old Greek word. It means "unpleasant" or "odious." This name was chosen because these mosquitoes can transmit diseases like dengue fever and yellow fever.
