Affordable housing facts for kids
Affordable housing means having a safe and decent place to live that doesn't cost too much. It's about making sure people can afford to buy a home or pay rent without struggling. When housing is affordable, people have more money for other important things. These include food, clothes, and school supplies.
Imagine how much money a family earns each month. Then, think about how much they pay for their home. If the home costs a very large part of their income, it's not affordable. When housing prices go up, but people's earnings stay the same, it becomes harder to find affordable places. The price of places to live is set by the Housing market.

Some cities with large universities were once good choices for students after they graduated. For example, the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin used to have very affordable housing.
In Berlin, Germany, the city decided to stop rent increases. This was because there were not enough affordable homes for people to rent. This shows how serious the problem of affordable housing can be in big cities.
