The Afon Seiont (pronounced `AH-von SAY-ont`) is a river in Gwynedd, Wales. Its name means "River Seiont" in the Welsh language. This river flows into the Menai Strait, which is a narrow stretch of water separating the island of Anglesey from mainland Wales.

The Afon Seiont River

The Afon Seiont is an important river in North Wales. It travels through beautiful landscapes before reaching the sea. Rivers like the Seiont are vital for local wildlife and the history of the areas they flow through.

Where the River Starts

The Afon Seiont begins its journey from Llyn Padarn, a large lake near the town of Llanberis. This lake is a popular spot for visitors. Water from Llyn Padarn flows out and starts the river's path.

Before it becomes the Afon Seiont, the river has another name. Between Llyn Padarn and the village of Llanrug, it is known as the Afon Rhythallt. After passing Llanrug, the river changes its name to Afon Seiont.

Its Journey to the Sea

The river generally flows towards the northwest. As it gets closer to the coast, it reaches the historic town of Caernarfon. Here, the Afon Seiont flows into the Menai Strait.

The river's mouth at Caernarfon creates a natural harbour. This harbour has been important for ships and boats for many centuries. It helped Caernarfon become a significant port.

How the River Gets Its Water

The water in Llyn Padarn, which feeds the Afon Seiont, comes from other smaller rivers and lakes. The main river flowing into Llyn Peris is the Afon Nant Peris. Llyn Peris then drains into Llyn Padarn.

Another river, the Afon Arddu, also adds water to Llyn Padarn. The Afon Arddu collects water from the northern slopes of Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales.

What's in a Name?

The name "Seiont" has a long history. Near Caernarfon, there was once a famous Roman fort called Segontium. The name of this fort comes from a Latin version of "Seiont."

In the ancient Brittonic languages, the word `*seg-ontio` meant "strong place." This suggests that the river or the area around it was known for its strength or importance even in ancient times.
