The Afon Wyre, also known as the River Wyre, is a small but important river in the county of Ceredigion, Wales. Sometimes it is called Afon Wyre Fawr, which means "Great Wyre." In the past, it was known as Gwyrai.

This river flows through beautiful Welsh countryside. It eventually empties into Cardigan Bay, which is part of the Irish Sea.

Exploring the Afon Wyre

The Afon Wyre is a lovely river that plays a role in the local environment. It helps shape the landscape of Ceredigion. Understanding its path helps us learn about the geography of this part of Wales.

The Journey of the Wyre

The Afon Wyre starts its journey in Ceredigion. For about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles), it flows north. It passes through a village called Lledrod during this first part of its course.

After Lledrod, the river changes direction. It turns west and continues for about 13 kilometers (8 miles). This is the longest part of its journey.

Towns Along the River

As the Afon Wyre flows west, it passes by several interesting places:

  • Llangwyryfon: This village is named after the river itself.
  • Llanrhystud: Here, the Afon Wyre is joined by two smaller rivers.

Joining Other Rivers

Near Llanrhystud, the Afon Wyre gets bigger. It is joined by two other rivers:

  • The Wyre Fach, which means "Little Wyre."
  • The Carrog.

These smaller rivers add their water to the Afon Wyre. This makes the main river stronger as it gets closer to the sea.

Where the Wyre Meets the Sea

After its long journey, the Afon Wyre finally reaches the coast. It flows into Cardigan Bay. Cardigan Bay is a large inlet of the Irish Sea. This is where the river's fresh water mixes with the salty ocean water.
