Agate is a small, unincorporated community located in Sioux County, Nebraska, in the United States. It is found along Nebraska Highway 29, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) south-southeast of Harrison. Agate is most famous for being home to the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, a special place where many ancient animal fossils have been discovered.

A Look Back: Agate's History

Agate got its name from the Agate Springs Ranch. This ranch belonged to a person named James H. Cook. The ranch itself was named because of the many agate rocks found in the area. Agate is a type of gemstone, often colorful and banded.

A post office was opened in Agate in 1899. This post office served the community for many years. It remained in operation until it was closed down in 1968.

Agate has a type of weather called a cool semi-arid climate. This means it's usually dry, but not extremely hot like a desert. It often has cold winters and warm summers.
