Discover Agate Falls
Agate Falls is a wonderful natural attraction. It's a great spot for families and friends to enjoy the outdoors. This scenic site is known for its impressive waterfall and the peaceful surroundings.
What Makes Agate Falls Special?
Agate Falls is a 39-foot-high (12 m) waterfall. That's about as tall as a four-story building! The water comes from the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River. This river flows down from the higher lands of Michigan's western Upper Peninsula.
The Ontonagon River drops a total of 875 feet (267 m) from the Bond Falls Flowage all the way to Lake Superior. Agate Falls is one part of this big drop in elevation. The water at Agate Falls flows over a strong type of rock called sandstone. This sandstone is very tough and doesn't wear away easily, which helps create the waterfall's shape.
How to Visit Agate Falls
It's easy to see Agate Falls! You can find a trail that starts from a parking lot right off M-28. This trail leads you to a great view of the falls.
Another cool way to see the waterfall is from an old railroad bridge. This sturdy bridge used to carry trains for the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. Now, it's part of a trail used by snowmobiles and ATVs. The bridge goes right over the falls, giving you an amazing view. There's also a picnic area nearby where you can relax and enjoy a meal.
