Aggijjat (in Inuktitut syllabics: ᐊᒡᒋᔾᔭᑦ) was once known as Durban Island. It is a small island located in the Canadian Arctic. You can find it in Nunavut, Canada.
This island is one of the many islands off the northeast coast of Baffin Island. It sits within Merchants Bay, which is part of the Davis Strait. Aggijjat is about 36 square kilometers (14 square miles) in size.
On the island's southeast side, there is a place called Durban Harbour. Close by, you can find a larger island named Paallavvik. Also, Auyuittuq National Park is located to the west on Baffin Island.
Island History and Its Purpose
Aggijjat, when it was called Durban Island (FOX-E), played a role in a very important defense system. It was once part of the Distant Early Warning Line, often called the DEW Line. This was a chain of radar stations built during the Cold War. Their job was to detect if any aircraft were flying over the Arctic.
Today, Aggijjat is part of the North Warning System. This system continues to monitor the Arctic skies. It helps protect Canada and North America.
Environmental Care and Cleanup
Because of its past use, Aggijjat is listed as a site that needs cleaning up. The Contaminated Sites Directorate in Iqaluit keeps track of such places. They plan for future work to make sure the island's environment is healthy again. This means removing any old materials or pollution left behind.
