Agra katewinsletae is a special kind of beetle. It's a carabid beetle, which means it's part of a large family of ground beetles. This particular beetle is famous because it was named after the well-known English actress Kate Winslet.

Meet the Kate Winslet Beetle

Discovery of a New Species

This unique beetle was first found in Costa Rica, a country in Central America. Scientists officially described it in 2002. The person who discovered and named this beetle was a scientist named Terry Erwin.

Why the Name?

Terry Erwin decided to name this beetle Agra katewinsletae to honor Kate Winslet. He was inspired by her role in the movie Titanic. Erwin mentioned that her character in the movie survived, but he worried about the beetle's future. He hoped that this elegant beetle, which lives in the rainforest canopy, would not disappear if its forest home was destroyed. Naming it after a famous person helps bring attention to the importance of protecting rainforests.

What Does It Look Like?

Agra katewinsletae is a small beetle. It measures about 8.5–13.0 mm (0.33–0.51 in) long. That's roughly the size of a small paperclip. It is also about 2.64–3.72 mm (0.104–0.146 in) wide. This makes it a tiny but interesting creature living high up in the rainforest trees.
