Agramonte is a village in Cuba. It is also known as a consejo popular, which means "people's council." This village is part of the Jagüey Grande area in Matanzas Province. With a population of over 10,500 people, Agramonte is one of the biggest villages in its municipality.

History of Agramonte

Agramonte was first started in 1859. Back then, it had a different name: Cuevitas. Later, it was renamed to honor Ignacio Agramonte. He was a brave Cuban leader and patriot. Ignacio Agramonte fought for Cuba's freedom during the Ten Years' War, which happened from 1868 to 1878.

Before 1976, Agramonte was its own independent area, like a small town with its own government. It covered the northern part of what is now the Jagüey Grande municipality.

Where is Agramonte?

Agramonte is located in the middle of a large farming area. It sits between two other towns, Perico and Jagüey Grande. Both of these towns are about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) away.

Agramonte is also:

  • 25 km (15.5 miles) from Colón
  • 28 km (17.4 miles) from Pedro Betancourt
  • 38 km (23.6 miles) from Calimete

The village has a main road, Road 222, that goes right through it. This road connects Jagüey and Perico. Agramonte is also about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of the A1 motorway, which is a major highway in Cuba.

The village also has a train station. This station is on the railway line that connects Havana to Cienfuegos. You can also catch a regional train service from Matanzas here.
