The red swampdragon (scientific name: Agrionoptera insignis allogenes) is a special kind of dragonfly. It belongs to the Libellulidae family, which is a large group of dragonflies.

You can find this amazing insect in several places. It lives in Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It might also be found in New Caledonia.

Meet the Red Swampdragon

The red swampdragon is a medium-sized dragonfly. Its wings can spread about 70 millimeters (about 2.7 inches) wide. Its body is around 40 millimeters (about 1.5 inches) long.

This dragonfly has cool yellow and black patterns on its synthorax. The synthorax is the part of its body where the wings and legs are attached. Its belly, called the abdomen, is usually reddish or orange. It has a black tip at the very end.

The front of its head, called the frons, is a bright, shiny metallic green. This makes it easy to spot!

Where Do They Live?

Red swampdragons love to live near water. You can often find them around ponds, small rivers (creeks), and swampy areas. They prefer places that have some shade from trees.

In Australia, they live in the northern parts. Their home stretches from the very top of the Northern Territory all the way across northern Australia. You can also find them down the east coast, reaching midway into New South Wales.

What About Their Status?

Scientists keep track of how many animals are in the wild. The red swampdragon has not yet been checked by a group called the IUCN Red List. This list helps us know if animals are in danger.

However, this dragonfly is listed in the Catalog of Life. This is a huge online database that lists all known species on Earth.
