Agrón's History
The name "Agrón" comes from the Latin word "Agrum," which means "Field." This name shows that farming has always been very important to the people living here. It has been their main way to earn a living for a long time.
Agrón's history is closely connected to the nearby town of Alhama de Granada. Like Alhama, Agrón has seen many different periods. It was part of the Roman Empire a long time ago. Then, it was under Muslim rule for many centuries. After that, it became Christian again following the Granada war.
Later, in the 1800s, Napoleonic soldiers were present in Agrón during the War of Independence. Today, a very large estate in Agrón, called Fatimbullar, is owned by the Dukes of Wellington.
People of Agrón
In the past, farming became more modern with new machines. This caused a big problem for Agrón. Many people lost their jobs in farming. Because of this, the number of people living in Agrón has been getting smaller since 1960.
Many people moved away to find work. They mainly went to other parts of Spain, like Catalonia, or even to other countries like Germany. According to the National Statistics Institute of Spain, in 2017, about 290 people lived in Agrón.
