Early Life and Politics
Abdallah was born in Domoni, a town on the island of Anjouan. He started working in government in the 1940s. At that time, the Comoros were still under the control of France. He was the head of the general council from 1949 to 1953. Later, he led the chamber of deputies in the 1970s.
First Time as President
In 1972, Abdallah became the leader of his political party, the Comoros Democratic Union (UDC). He then became the president of the government council and the Chief Minister of the Comoros. He held this position until July 6, 1975.
On that date, the Comoros islands became independent from France. However, the island of Mayotte chose to stay part of France. Abdallah became the first president of the newly independent Comoros. But his time as president was short. On August 3, 1975, he was removed from power by Said Mohamed Jaffar in a sudden takeover. Jaffar was later removed from power by Ali Soilih in 1976.
Second Time as President
Abdallah had been living in Paris, France, after being removed from power. In May 1978, a group led by a mercenary named Bob Denard helped Abdallah return to power. A mercenary is a soldier who fights for money, not for their country.
After a short period, Abdallah became the co-chairman of a new government group. By October 1978, he was the only chairman. On October 25, Abdallah officially became president again. He stayed in office until his death, even though there were three attempts to remove him.
In 1982, Abdallah made his party, the Comorian Union for Progress (UCP), the only legal party. This meant the Comoros became a one-party state. During this time, Bob Denard, the mercenary, had a lot of influence. He became very wealthy and owned much of the best land in the Comoros. He used this land to build luxury hotels for tourists.
His Death
On November 26, 1989, Ahmed Abdallah died in his office in Moroni. The exact reasons for his death are unclear and have been debated.
After his death, Said Mohamed Djohar took control of the country. France, which had become concerned about Denard's influence, sent military forces to help remove Denard and his mercenaries from the Comoros.
