The Forau d'Aigualluts is a special place in the mountains of northeastern Spain. It's a natural hole in the ground where water disappears, and it also has a beautiful waterfall. You can find it in the Province of Huesca, high up on Pico Aneto mountain, about 2,074 meters (or 6,804 feet) above sea level. The water here is part of the Ésera River.

What is Forau d'Aigualluts?

The Forau d'Aigualluts is a very popular spot in the Benasque Valley. Many people visit it, especially if it's their first time in the area. It's a natural chasm, which is like a deep crack or hole in the ground.

How the Water Disappears and Reappears

Water from the Aneto glacier flows into this chasm and then disappears underground. It travels a long way beneath the mountains! This water then reappears in a different valley called the Val d'Aran. From there, it joins the Garonne river. The Garonne river eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean, near the city of Bordeaux in France.

The Journey of the Water

Before the water vanishes into the Forau d'Aigualluts, it flows across a large, flat grassy area called the Plan d’Aigualluts. Here, the water moves slowly, making small, winding turns, like a snake. These turns are called meanders. Finally, the water drops over the colorful Aiguallut waterfall, falling directly into the large chasm. This whole process is a great example of how water moves through mountains and underground.
