Aileen San Pablo-Baviera (born August 26, 1959 – died March 21, 2020) was an important expert from the Philippines. She was a political scientist, which means she studied how governments work. She was also a sinologist, meaning she specialized in studying China. Aileen Baviera was known as one of the top experts on China in her home country.

Aileen Baviera's Career
Early Education and Research
Aileen Baviera earned her first degree in October 1979. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service from the University of the Philippines. She graduated with cum laude, which means she finished with high honors.
From 1981 to 1983, she had a special chance to do research in China. She studied modern Chinese history at the University of Beijing. During this time, she learned the Chinese language. She also received a diploma from the Beijing Language Institute. She traveled a lot, exploring the northern and western parts of China.
Advanced Studies and Teaching
In 1987, Baviera earned her Master of Arts degree. Her studies focused on Asian topics, especially China and East Asia. Later, in 2003, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in political science.
From 1980 to 1986, she worked as a researcher. She also trained people at the Foreign Service Institute of the State Department. She then taught political science at the University of the Philippines until 1990. After that, she worked as a research coordinator until 1993. This was at the Philippine-China Development Resource Center.
Leadership Roles
From June 1993 to May 1998, Aileen Baviera led the Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies. This center was part of the Foreign Service Institute. At the same time, from 1996 to 1997, she taught at the Ateneo de Manila University.
She became the executive director of the Philippine-China Development Resource Center from June 1998 to December 2001. She was also an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Asian Center until June 2005. From September 2003 to October 2009, she served as the Dean of the Asian Center.
Later, from July 2005, she became a full professor. In July 2010, she became the chief editor for Asian Politics & Policy. This was for the Policy Studies Organization in Washington, D.C.. Her last role was as president and CEO of the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation.
Death
Aileen Baviera passed away on March 21, 2020. She died from pneumonia caused by COVID-19. She caught the illness on March 12, after returning from a security conference in Paris, France. She was one of two delegates from the Philippines who got sick at that conference and later died.
Aileen Baviera was married to Jorge Villegas Baviera, who died in 2018. They had three children together.
