Aimée Antoinette Camus (born May 1, 1879 – died April 17, 1965) was a French botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. Aimée is famous for her detailed work on orchids and oak trees. She also holds an amazing record: she named 677 different land plant species. This is the second highest number named by any female scientist!

Who Was Aimée Antoinette Camus?

Aimée Antoinette Camus was born in a town called L'Isle-Adam, which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Paris, France. She grew up in a family that loved science and nature.

A Family of Botanists

Aimée's father, Edmond Gustave Camus, was also a botanist. He studied plants, just like she would. Because of her father's influence, Aimée became very interested in plants. She decided to focus on studying orchids and how plants are built inside. She even worked with other famous plant experts like Paul Bergon and Paul Henri Lecomte. Aimée also had a sister named Blanche-Augustine Camus, who became a talented painter.

Discovering New Plants

Aimée Antoinette Camus wrote an important book called L'Iconographie des Orchidées d´Europe et du Bassin Méditerranéen. This book showed many pictures and details about orchids found in Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea.

She also did a lot of work on oak trees and stone oaks. She was the first person to organize and describe the different types of stone oaks in a complete way.

Naming Bamboo Species

Aimée also named a group of seven tropical bamboo plants Neohouzeaua. She chose this name to honor Jean Houzeau de Lehaie. He had spent his whole life studying and helping bamboo grow in Europe and Africa. This shows how much Aimée respected other scientists' work.
