Who Was Akarius Fitz Bardolph?

Akarius Fitz Bardolph was a nobleman who lived a long time ago, from the 11th to the 12th century. He was a very important person in his community. As the Lord of Ravensworth, he controlled a lot of land and had many responsibilities.

His Family and Home

Akarius was the son of another nobleman, also named Bardolph. Their family was well-known in Richmondshire. This region is in northern England and is famous for its beautiful river valleys. Akarius worked under a more powerful lord named Alan, Earl of Richmond. This meant Akarius managed his own lands but also had duties to the Earl.

Akarius had two sons. His first son was Harveus fitz Akarius. His second son was named William Bardolf. The FitzHugh family, who later became Lords of Ravensworth, are descendants of Akarius.

Founding a Monastery

One of Akarius's most important actions was helping to start a monastery. In 1145, he gave land in a place called Fors in Wharfedale. This land was used to build a new religious community for monks.

The Abbey's New Home

After Akarius died in 1161, his son Harveus continued his father's work. In 1165, Harveus agreed to move the monastery to a new, permanent location. The monks moved to the valley of the River Ure. The monastery was then renamed the Abbey of Yore Vale, which is now known as Jervaulx Abbey.

His Legacy

Akarius Fitz Bardolph is remembered for his role as a powerful lord and for his contribution to the founding of a significant religious site. The monastery he helped start, which became Jervaulx Abbey, is still an important historical place today.
