Akhzivland is a tiny, self-declared country located on the coast of Israel, right near the border with Lebanon. It's known as a "micronation," which means it's a small place that claims to be an independent country but isn't officially recognized by other governments. Eli Avivi started Akhzivland in 1972. Even though its legal status is still debated, the Israel Ministry of Tourism actually promotes it as a fun and unique place to visit!
This unique micronation is found near the old ruins of Achziv. Achziv was an ancient settlement right on the Mediterranean Sea in the Western Galilee area. It's about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of the city of Nahariya.
Near Akhzivland, you can find a national park and a field school. There are also the ruins of an old Palestinian village called Az-Zeeb. This village was captured by the Carmeli Brigade during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Eli Avivi, the founder and president of Akhzivland, passed away on May 15, 2018.
