Akilattirattu Ammanai facts for kids
Akilathirattu Ammanai (Tamil: அகிலத்திரட்டு அம்மானை) is a very important religious book for people who follow Ayyavazhi. Ayyavazhi is a spiritual path that is part of Hinduism in Southern India. The name Akilathirattu Ammanai means "Collection of the World Ballad." It is also known as Thiru Edu, which means "The Holy Book." People often shorten its name to Akilam. This book is the longest Ammanai (a type of poem or ballad) ever written.
History of Akilathirattu Ammanai
The book says that a person named Hari Gopalan Citar wrote it. He finished writing it on the 27th day of the Tamil month of Karthikai, which is around November or December, in the year 1841 CE. Hari Gopalan Citar believed that God woke him up while he was sleeping. God then told him to write down the words he heard.
At first, Akilathirattu was written on palm leaves. Later, in 1939, it was printed as a book.
The author explains that the book tells a story about God coming to Earth in the current age, called the Kali Yukam or "Iron Age." The goal is to change the world into a better time, known as the Dharma Yukam or "Golden Age."
This religious story combines real events about Ayya Vaikundar and his work. It also includes stories from Hindu myths, called Puranas, and epic tales, called Itihasas. The book is written as if the god Vishnu is telling the entire story to his wife, Lakshmi.
Hari Gopalan Citar said that he did not know what he was writing. He would wake up each morning and not remember what he had written the day before.
After Ayya Vaikundar passed away, the palm leaf book, which had been kept closed, was finally opened. It contained all the rules and teachings of Ayyavazhi. Following these instructions, Ayya Vaikundar's followers, called Citars, spread the message of Ayyavazhi far and wide.
