Akina Shirt, born on January 18, 1994, is a talented singer from the First Nations community. She is especially known for singing in the Cree language, which is an Indigenous language spoken by many First Nations people in Canada. Akina has been part of several choirs, including Victoria School's Mixed Jazz Choir, the famous Kokopelli Choir, Shaftesbury High School choir, and the Sacred Heart Church of First People's Choir.

Akina's Famous Performances
Singing the National Anthem in Cree
Akina Shirt became well-known on February 3, 2007. On that day, she sang "O Canada", the Canadian national anthem, in the Cree language. This special performance happened at a NHL game. It was a hockey match between the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks.
This was a very important moment in Canadian history. It was the first time the national anthem was sung in an Indigenous language at a major sports event. Before the game, Akina was also interviewed on a radio show called As it Happens on CBC Radio One. She even sang the anthem live on the radio show!
Music for Education
In 2006, Akina recorded a special five-song CD. This CD was made for Alberta Education. It was part of a new social studies program that started in June 2007. Her music helped students learn about different cultures.
Akina has performed in many big places. These include the Francis Winspear Centre for Music and the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. She has also sung at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary.
