The Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

The Jubilee Auditorium opened its doors in 1957. It was built to celebrate Alberta's 50th birthday as a province. This amazing building sits on a large piece of land next to the University of Alberta.

The Government of Alberta owns and runs the Jubilee Auditorium. It's a home for many talented groups. These include the Edmonton Opera, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, and the Alberta Ballet.

What Happens at the Jubilee?

Many different shows and events take place here. You can see opera, ballet, and dance performances. It also hosts Broadway shows, funny stand-up comedians, and other theatre plays.

Famous musicians and bands have performed concerts here. You can also find orchestras, cultural festivals, and awards ceremonies. It's a busy place with something for everyone!

Inside the Auditorium

The main theatre is very large. It can hold 2,538 people on three different levels. If the Orchestra pit is being used, it can still seat 2,416 people.

Besides the main theatre, there are other spaces. These include a banquet room for big dinners and a meeting room. There's also a rehearsal hall where performers practice. Even the lobbies can be used for trade shows and meetings.

A Big Renovation

In 2005, the Jubilee Auditorium got a major makeover. This was part of Alberta's 100th birthday celebration. The renovations cost a lot of money, about $91 million. This helped make the building even better for visitors and performers.

Famous Performances and Records

A famous British rock band called Procol Harum played here on November 18, 1971. They performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This show was so good that it was recorded and released as a live album. It was called Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

In January 2010, a group that reviews theatres, Pollstar, shared some exciting news. They said the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium was the busiest theatre in Canada in 2009! It sold 146,555 tickets that year. This was more than its twin theatre in Calgary and even more than a famous hall in Toronto.
