Aktzin facts for kids
Aktzin (also spelled Aktsin) was a very important god for the Totonac people in ancient Mexico. He was known as the god of rain, thunder, and lightning. Other ancient groups in Mexico had similar gods. For example, the Aztecs called their rain god Tláloc, and the Mayas called theirs Chaac.

Aktzin: The Totonac God of Weather
Aktzin was often shown as a man wearing a special headdress. He also had rings around his eyes, which looked a bit like spectacles.
Aktzin's Powers and Symbols
In one hand, Aktzin held a hammer or an axe. When he struck the clouds with it, it would create thunder and lightning! From his other hand, water would pour out, either directly from his palm or from a pot he was holding. These things showed how powerful the weather could be. It could bring life-giving rain for crops, but also destructive storms.
The Totonac People and Their Land
The Totonac civilization was found by Spanish explorers in 1519. These explorers were led by Hernán Cortés. The Totonac lands were located along the Gulf coast of Mexico. This area is now known as the state of Veracruz.
