Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn ibn Masʻūd ibn Muḥammad al-Farrā' al-Baghawī was a very important Persian Muslim scholar. He was born in 1041 or 1044 (which is 433 AH or 436 AH in the Islamic calendar). He passed away in 1122 (516 AH).
Al-Baghawī was famous for many things. He was a mufassir, which means he was an expert at explaining the Quran. He was also a hadith scholar, meaning he studied and collected the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. Plus, he was a Shafi‘i faqih, an expert in Islamic law according to the Shafi'i school of thought.
His most well-known book is Maʻālim at-Tanzīl. This book helps people understand the Quran better.
The name Al-Farra' means someone who trades with fur. Al-Baghawī comes from his hometown, Bagh or Baghshûr. This town was in a region called Khorasan, located between Herat (in modern-day Afghanistan) and Marw al-Rudh. He later died in Marw al-Rudh.
Al-Baghawī also wrote other important books about hadith. These include Sharh as-Sunnah and Masabih as-Sunnah. The book Masabih as-Sunnah became even more famous as Mishkah al-Masabih after at-Tabrizi added to it. Al-Baghawī was a student of a scholar named al-Qadi Husayn.
