Albert Cornelius Freeman, Jr. (born March 21, 1934 – died August 9, 2012) was an American actor and director. He was known for his many roles in movies and TV shows.

Career Highlights

Al Freeman, Jr. appeared in many movies. These include My Sweet Charlie and Malcolm X. He was also in TV shows like The Cosby Show and Law & Order. Many people remember him as Police Captain Ed Hall. He played this role on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. He was on the show from 1972 to 1987. He also had guest roles in 1988 and 2000.

In 1979, he won a Daytime Emmy Award. This award was for best actor in a drama series. He was the first actor from One Life to Live to win this award. He was also the first African American actor to earn it. Besides acting, he directed One Life to Live. This made him one of the first African Americans to direct a soap opera.

After One Life to Live, Freeman acted in the movie Down in the Delta. He also performed in Broadway theatre shows. These included Look to the Lilies and Medea. He played Elijah Muhammad in the movie Malcolm X. For this role, he won an NAACP Image Award in 1995. This award was for best supporting actor in a movie. Interestingly, he had played Malcolm X himself before. This was in the 1979 TV miniseries Roots: The Next Generations.

Later Years

Later in his career, Al Freeman, Jr. taught acting. He taught at Howard University in Washington, D.C.. It is important to know that he was not related to the famous actor Morgan Freeman. Al Freeman, Jr. passed away on August 9, 2012. He was 78 years old when he died in Washington, D.C..
