The Alagón is a river in Spain. It flows for about 205 kilometers (127 miles). This river is the longest tributary of the Tagus River, which is a very important river in Spain.

The Alagón River starts high up in the Sierra de Francia mountains. Its source is at 1060 meters (about 3,478 feet) above sea level. This is near a village called Frades de la Sierra, which is south of Salamanca. The Alagón flows towards the southwest. It passes through towns like San Esteban de la Sierra, Guijo de Granadilla, and Coria. Finally, the Alagón River joins the Tagus River near Alcántara.

Dams on the Alagón River

The Alagón River has three important dams along its path. Dams are like big walls built across a river. They help control the water flow and can also be used to make electricity.

What are the Main Dams?

  • The largest dam on the Alagón is called "Gabriel y Galán." This dam is very powerful. It can generate 110 megawatts (MW) of electricity. That's enough power for many homes and businesses!
  • Another dam is named "El Pontón." It is located near Guijo de Granadilla. This dam also makes electricity, producing 52 MW.
  • The third dam is the "Montehermoso-Valdeobispo" dam.

What Rivers Flow Into the Alagón?

Many smaller rivers flow into the Alagón River. These smaller rivers are called tributaries. They add more water to the Alagón as it flows.

  • Francia River
  • Sangusín River
  • Cuerpo de Hombre River
  • La Palla River
  • Río de los Ángeles
  • Ambroz River
  • Jerte River
