Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni was a politician from Burundi. He was born on April 23, 1972. He served as the Prime Minister of Burundi from June 24, 2020, to September 7, 2022. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the Minister of Internal Security from 2015 to 2020.
Early Life and Education
Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni was born in Kanyosha, a town in Bujumbura Mairie Province. This was on April 23, 1972. He went to the University of Burundi for his education.
He was supposed to graduate in 1994. However, he did not attend his graduation ceremony. Instead, he joined a group called the Forces for the Defense of Democracy. This was after the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye.
His Time in Politics
In 2003, a political group called the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy agreed to stop fighting. This was part of a ceasefire in the Burundian Civil War.
From 2004 to 2005, Bunyoni worked as a leader in the new police force. He was like the main supervisor. Then, from 2005 to 2007, he became the Chief of Police for all of Burundi.
Between 2007 and 2011, Bunyoni was the Minister of Internal Security. He held this important job again from 2015 to 2020. From 2011 to 2014, he worked in the President's Office. He was in charge of civil affairs.
On June 23, 2020, the Parliament of Burundi voted. They approved Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni to be the next Prime Minister. He was chosen by the new president, Évariste Ndayishimiye. Bunyoni became the 8th Prime Minister of Burundi. He officially took office on June 24, 2020.
President Évariste Ndayishimiye later removed Bunyoni from his position. This happened after the President accused some people of planning against him. On April 21, 2023, Bunyoni was arrested. A document from the Justice ministry confirmed his arrest on April 23, 2023.
On June 27, 2024, a court in Burundi confirmed a life prison sentence against Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni.
