Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni (born 23 April 1972) is a politician from Burundi. He served as the Prime Minister of Burundi from June 2020 to September 2022. Before becoming prime minister, he was the Minister of Internal Security from 2015 to 2020.
Early Life and Education
Bunyoni was born on 23 April 1972 in a place called Kanyosha, in Bujumbura Mairie Province, Burundi. He went to the University of Burundi. He finished his studies in 1994 but did not go to his graduation ceremony. Instead, he joined a group fighting for change after the president was sadly killed. He was part of a fighting group called the Forces for the Defense of Democracy.
Political Journey
In 2003, Mr. Bunyoni's group, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy, made a peace agreement with other groups during the Burundian Civil War.
From 2004 to 2005, Bunyoni worked as a high-ranking officer, similar to an Inspector General, in the new police force. Then, from 2005 to 2007, he became the Chief of Police for all of Burundi.
Between 2007 and 2011, Bunyoni served as the Minister of Internal Security. He held this important job again from 2015 to 2020. From 2011 to 2014, he worked in the President's Office, helping with civil affairs.
On 23 June 2020, the Parliament of Burundi chose Bunyoni to be the country's 8th prime minister. This happened after Évariste Ndayishimiye became the new president and suggested Bunyoni for the role. He was sworn into office on the same day.
President Évariste Ndayishimiye later removed Mr. Bunyoni from his role. This happened after the president said there were people planning against him. Mr. Bunyoni was later arrested in April 2023. The government's human rights group said he was treated fairly.
Some international groups have placed restrictions on Mr. Bunyoni. This is because they believe he was involved in problems during a time of trouble in Burundi, when the former president decided to run for another term. In June 2024, a high court in Burundi decided that Mr. Bunyoni would serve a life sentence.
Other Important Roles
Besides his main jobs, Mr. Bunyoni also worked on international security matters. In 2007, he was one of the people sent by the United Nations to help promote peace and safety around the world. He also led a committee for police forces in East Africa, working with Interpol.
