Gervais Ndirakobuca (born in 1970) is a politician from Burundi. He has been the Prime Minister of Burundi since September 7, 2022. Before this, he served as the Minister of Interior, Public Security, and Community Development. He is known for his role during protests in Burundi in 2015. At one point, he faced restrictions from the United States and the European Union. This was due to concerns about how human rights were handled during those events.
Early Life and Career
Gervais Ndirakobuca was born in 1970 in a place called Bukinanyana. This area is in the Cibitoke Province of Burundi.
He was involved in the Burundian Civil War, which ended in 2005. During this time, he was a commander. His nickname was "Ndakugarika," which means 'I will kill you' in the local Kirundi language. After the civil war, he joined the National Police of Burundi. He rose through the ranks to become a Commissioner, which is a high position. People often called him General.
Role in Government
As a police commissioner, Gervais Ndirakobuca was involved in responding to protests in 2015. These protests happened after changes were made to the constitution. These changes allowed the then-President, Pierre Nkurunziza, to seek a third term.
Because of the strong actions taken during these protests, several countries and groups placed restrictions on Ndirakobuca. These included the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, and the European Union. These restrictions were due to concerns about how people's rights were treated during the protests. Many people lost their lives during this period. International groups also looked into the events.
Despite these restrictions, President Évariste Ndayishimiye appointed him as the Minister of Interior in June 2020. This was a very important job. Ndirakobuca became the most internationally restricted member of Burundi's government at that time. He was seen as a very powerful minister, overseeing several key areas like interior, security, and community development.
Becoming Prime Minister
Gervais Ndirakobuca became the Prime Minister of Burundi on September 7, 2022. He took over from the previous Prime Minister, Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni. This change happened after President Ndayishimiye spoke about a possible plan against his government. The parliament voted for Ndirakobuca to become Prime Minister, and the vote was unanimous.
